ELSA Training

Outline

ELSAs are existing Teaching Assistants, Family Workers or similar posts who have been trained to take on a specific Emotional Literacy role. ELSAs have been successfully implemented in a number of areas and shown positive outcomes for children, as well as for schools more generally in reducing exclusions, raising achievement and improving staff wellbeing.
The training is delivered by Educational Psychologists and will introduce participants to a range of activities and resources that can be used and opportunities to practice the skills of an ELSA.

Description

The ELSA role consists of two overlapping dimensions:
Teaching the skills and competencies of emotional literacy:
· Self Awareness
· Self regulation (managing feelings)
· Motivation
· Empathy
· Social Skills
Providing emotional support:
ELSAs offer dedicated time to listen and to work with the emotional difficulties that many children and young people experience. Schools will identify a designated workspace for the ELSA to provide a safe and therapeutic environment in which pupils can develop and practice emotional literacy skills. ELSAs will play an important role in advocating emotional literacy in the school as a whole.
